I've been trying to do this for like two hours now and I'm really frustrated. I'm using GIMP right now 'cause it's free. I learned how to do the whole transparent background thing around my character, but when I try to upload it to DeviantArt it says GIF images aren't allowed to be posted in traditional art? It's still traditional, the only thing I'm doing digital is removing the background. Which categories are GIF images allowed in? I thought GIF was allowed in traditional art. Also, if i try to save my character with the transparent background to another type of file I get confused on what I am supposed to choose when exporting the file? I'm not too good with all this stuff. When I do end up saving it as another type of file and uploading it to dA, there is now a black background instead of a transparent one. I am really confused! All I want is a nice, crisp transparency behind my characters! Please help! Keep in mind I use GIMP, so it may be different from all the other programs.

Most GIF images aren't allowed in DA. In your case you don't want to save it as a .gif. you might want to try saving it as a .PSD file. PSD files are allowed on DA and you can access the file on Photoshop with the same layers you had in the first place. GIF images don't support transparency unless you are editing the GIF image with an animation program and the picture is moving (Moving icons like this one :D are usually saved GIF format since they are more than one frame (They don't move)) Since all your pics are a still image, you get that black background. To save it as a PSD file just go to File --> Save as...----> exporting the file is just picking a place to put it. you might want to put it on "Desktop" or "Documents" because its easier to locate it. If .psd doesn't upload in traditional art for some reason, put .jpg instead of .psd at the end of the file name when exporting the file on Photoshop.
